How Fluoride Works and why it is so essential
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that is excellent for helping to protect and harden young teeth. It is important to ensure your child receives an adequate amount of fluoride which is something our dentists or our dental therapist can chat to you about. This is because fluoride will concentrate in their bones and teeth, helping to harden the enamel on their primary or baby teeth as well as hardening the enamel of adult teeth that have yet to emerge.
Fluoride can be found in certain foods and sometimes in water supplies and of course in fluoride toothpaste. If we feel your child will benefit from additional fluoride, then we will recommend fluoride treatments. Fluoride can be applied to their teeth during a visit to Coastal Smiles, in the form of a gel or foam in mouth trays that are left in position for a few minutes, or as fluoride varnish. The varnish is painted onto clean teeth and is left to penetrate for several hours or overnight before being brushed off.
Fluoride is a very safe and effective way to help protect your child’s teeth and this can be a great preventative treatment.
