Fissure sealants protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth as these areas are particularly vulnerable to developing cavities. This is because they have lots of deep grooves and fissures that can easily trap food and bacteria and which may be tricky to keep thoroughly clean.
Fissure sealants are a little like a very liquid filling and consist of a very thin composite layer that is painted onto the tooth surfaces. The sealant soon hardens, forming a protective barrier against bacteria and creating a smooth, easy-to-clean surface. Application is simple as teeth are lightly etched to create a better bond between the tooth and sealant, before the sealant is painted onto the tooth surfaces. We can harden the sealant with a special light, or can leave it to harden naturally. You’ll be able to eat and drink almost immediately afterwards.
Fissure sealants should last many years but they can be renewed if necessary. These sealants can only be applied to healthy teeth that do not have any decay or fillings.
