Here at Coastal Smiles, we take preventative dental care very seriously and regular examinations are extremely important. Generally, patients are recommended to visit us every six months and regular check-ups are more cost-effective in the longer term, enabling us to detect and treat any problems early on.
The Purpose of Regular Examinations
During your examination, our dentist will closely examine your teeth and gums and will gently probe them for any signs of weakness that could indicate a cavity or periodontal disease (gum disease). Intra oral photos are taken of any areas of concern. We do take digital dental x-rays at regular intervals, typically every two years for adults in good dental health.
We will regularly screen your mouth for signs of oral cancer, a disease that is unfortunately becoming more common and which can be treated much more effectively with an early diagnosis. This is simply a visual examination and is very quick and non–invasive.
Discussing Any Findings
Afterwards, we will discuss anything we might have found or will talk to you about your dental health and ways to improve it. The intra oral photos taken during your examination allow us to explain things a little more clearly, as these magnified images can be viewed in our surgeries so you will be able to see any problems we feel need treatment. We always take the time to talk about every possible treatment option as we want you to have all the information required to make an informed choice about your dental care and to be confident in your decision.
