Are You Cleaning Your Teeth Correctly?

man Brushing small

Are your brushing and flossing techniques the very best they could be?

When Should I Brush and Floss My Teeth?

Brush your teeth at least twice a day, for two minutes each time using fluoride toothpaste. It is best to brush first thing in the morning and last thing at night. When brushing, imagine your mouth is split into four quarters and spend 30 seconds cleaning each section. Make sure you methodically clean all tooth surfaces, holding the brush at a 45-degree angle so it cleans right down to the gums.

Floss last thing at night using a 45cm length of floss to gently clean in between each tooth, taking the floss to just below the gums. If you find flossing difficult, ask us about interdental brushes or water flossers so we can discuss which might be best for you.

Manual or Electric Toothbrush?

Effective brushing is down to technique so choose the brush you feel comfortable using. However, an electric toothbrush can be easier to hold and will have a built-in timer that alerts you when 30 seconds has passed.

Choosing a Toothbrush

Choose a small brush head with rounded, soft to medium bristles that will comfortably fit right to the back of your mouth. Change your toothbrush every two to three months when it begins to look worn.

Don’t Forget Your Checkups and Cleanings

Regular checkups and cleanings are vital and will only take an hour or so, twice a year, allowing us to closely monitor your dental health. If we do see anything wrong, treatment will be quicker and more cost-effective. Our dental team can also help you with personalised advice on brushing and flossing
