Amalgam is an alloy made from a combination of metals including mercury. This silver-coloured filling material has been used for decades and while hard-wearing, it isn’t necessarily the best way to restore damaged and decayed teeth. We prefer to provide amalgam-free dentistry for our patients because modern restorative materials are healthier and more aesthetically pleasing. If you have a cavity that requires treatment or need an older filling replaced we will suggest using tooth coloured composite resin.
Why Choose Composite Resin over Amalgam?
As amalgam is a metal, it flexes whenever it contacts hot or cold substances and when under pressure, for example during chewing. Over time, even these minute movements can cause microfractures in your tooth, weakening it so it is more likely to fail. Composite resin doesn’t flex so there is no danger of this side-effect. Amalgam is packed tightly into cavities but doesn’t bond with the tooth. As amalgam fillings age, they can begin to leak, allowing in disease-causing bacteria. Composite resin bonds strongly to the tooth, sealing the tooth which helps to prevent infection.
All fillings need replacing occasionally, so the next time you need a new filling, you can choose beautiful, durable composite resin. Once your tooth is restored, the filling is virtually invisible.
